Two Top 5's in Twin 50's

Saturday, August 9, 2008

09 August 2008 Roseville Ca.Laura Hayes added her 9th and 10th top five finishes to her 2008 record in an exciting and impressive manner.

To start the day off, Laura qualified her #22 Peoplefinders.com Chevy in the 5th spot. When the invert was drawn, she would move her starting position to the outside of row one. Hayes ran 2nd for the first laps until she ran out of room in between the car to her inside and the wall on a lap 5 restart. From the contact, Laura got the worst part of it when she fell from 2nd to 9th in one turn. Keeping herself calm and composed, and with her dad encouraging her over the radio, Hayes was able to pilot her car back up through the field. Passing cars on the inside and outside, Laura was the one to watch in the first 50 lap race. When the checkered dropped, Hayes crossed the line in 3rd spot closing on the leaders, a great comeback!

After the race, Laura commented, "The car was definitely the best it's been all season. I could put it wherever I needed and it stuck with me. Thanks to a great pit crew, my dad and my Uncle Dennis, I was able to bring home another good finish."

Before the second feature, another invert was drawn and Laura would start 3rd. As a result of adjustments to the setup, it took several laps before the car came to her. Laura settled into 5th and as soon as the car came alive, she rolled around the outside of 4th place in turns 1 and 2. But the 6th place car decided to make it 3 wide in turns 3 and 4. Hayes was forced into the marbles and lost some ground but she soon recovered and began a multi-lap battle for 4th place with the always-competitive Gary Glenn. Being patient but pressuring the #50, Laura made her move on lap 36. The 2nd and 3rd place cars were now in Laura's view but it appeared running them down would be difficult in the closing laps. Hayes caught 3rd place on the final lap and made her move entering the final turn. In a drag race to the finish, the #22 inched in front, bringing home her second 3rd place finish of the night.

Laura now sits 5th in the points standings, only 19 out of 4th!
