June 16, 2007, Tracy Ca. Coming off an impressive 3rd place finish at All American Speedway in her first sprint car event, Laura Hayes and her team looked forward to racing on the fast half mile at Altamont, near Tracy, CA. With high expectations for a good finish, the race didn't turn out as anticipated; it turned into what we call a "character building" weekend.
From the first practice session on Friday, the PeopleFinders.com Chevy/Beast, wasn't handling properly, suffering from on-throttle oversteer; Laura and her team tried everything they could think of to cure the problem but nothing seemed to make a difference. The car continued to be loose on race day. Laura hustled the car in the heat race, ran as high as second, and finished a respectable third. In the main, 11th was the best she could do. Unfortunately this meant Laura's streak of finishing in the top 10 in all her USAC races since July of 2006 came to an end. On the positive side, Hayes did walk away with some very good experience in driving a loose car on a track where speeds reach up to 145mph. Laura is eagerly awaiting her return to Altamont in July with another chance to conquer the track.
The Western States USAC sprints are headed to Madera Speedway on July 7th. Everyone at Laura Hayes Racing is looking forward to running on the 1/3-mile and are preparing for the opportunity.
